Bag filtration is one of the most widely used methods of liquid filtration because it is simple, scalable and cost-effective. A bag filter system normally consists of a pressure-rated vessel, a support basket and a replaceable filter bag. Liquid enters the vessel, passes through the filter bag and exits after suspended solids have been captured by the filter media.
The system can be configured for light-duty flows, high-volume process lines, chemical compatibility requirements or applications where operators need fast and straightforward filter bag changeout. Depending on the application, vessels may be stainless steel, non-metallic or custom fabricated.

In a typical bag filter vessel, contaminated liquid enters the housing and is directed into the filter bag. The filter bag is supported by a perforated basket so that the bag remains correctly positioned during operation.
As liquid passes through the filter bag, suspended particles are captured either on the surface of the media or within the depth of the material. The filtered liquid then exits the vessel and continues through the process line.
When the filter bag reaches its dirt-holding limit, it can be removed and replaced. In some applications, a cleanable stainless steel basket may be used instead of a disposable filter bag.

Filter bags are available in different media types and micron ratings to suit the required particle removal performance. The correct filter bag should be selected based on the fluid, particle type, solids loading, temperature, chemical compatibility and allowable pressure drop.
Nominal-rated bags are commonly used for economical general-purpose filtration, while high-efficiency media may be selected where improved particle retention is required.

Filter bags are often described as either nominal-rated or high-efficiency media. A nominal rating is a general indication of the particle size range that the bag is expected to remove under certain conditions. Nominal ratings are useful for product selection, but they should not be treated as an exact or absolute particle removal guarantee.
High-efficiency filter bags are selected where improved particle retention is required. These bags may provide more consistent removal performance, but they can also create higher pressure drop and may require more careful sizing.
Correct bag filter selection starts with understanding the process. The vessel, bag size, media type and micron rating should be selected together so the system can handle the required flow without excessive pressure drop or short bag life.
A correctly sized system can reduce maintenance frequency, improve process reliability and help protect pumps, valves, spray nozzles, heat exchangers or other downstream equipment.
