Replacement Filter Bags for Bag Filter Vessels

Filter bags are the replaceable filtration media used inside compatible bag filter vessels. They capture suspended solids as liquid passes through the bag, helping improve liquid cleanliness, protect downstream equipment and support reliable process operation.

The correct filter bag depends on the fluid, particle size, solids loading, operating temperature, chemical compatibility, flow rate and the level of removal efficiency required. For many applications, a standard nominal-rated felt bag is suitable. Other applications may require mesh, extended life, high-efficiency or pleated media.

Monarch Asia Pacific supplies filter bags for new filtration systems and replacement requirements, including options suitable for many industry-standard bag filter housings.

Common applications include:

  • Process water filtration
  • Cooling water and wash water
  • Chemical liquid filtration
  • Paints, inks, coatings and resins
  • Food and beverage process liquids
  • Pre-filtration before pumps, valves and equipment

How Liquid Filter Bags Work

In a bag filter vessel, liquid is directed into the filter bag while the bag is supported by a perforated basket. The filter media captures suspended solids either on the surface of the material or within the depth of the media, depending on the bag construction.

Once the filter bag becomes loaded with retained solids, the pressure drop across the vessel increases and the bag is replaced. Choosing the right media and micron rating helps balance filtration performance, bag life and pressure drop.

  • Simple and effective replacement filtration media
  • Available in multiple materials and micron ratings
  • Suitable for compatible single or multi-bag vessels
  • Selection depends on fluid, solids loading and filtration target

Quick Guide to Filter Bag Types

The correct filter bag type depends on required particle removal, dirt loading, bag life, fluid compatibility and pressure drop.

Filter Bag TypeRemoval Size RangeTypical Selection Reason
Standard Felt Bags1 to 200 micron nominalEconomical general-purpose filtration for many industrial liquids.
Nylon Monofilament25 to 1250 micronMesh filtration where defined openings or coarse particle removal are required.
Extended Life Bags1 to 100 micron nominalLonger service life and reduced changeout frequency in suitable applications.
High Removal Efficiency Bags0.2, 0.6, 1, 5, 10 and 25 micron absolute ratingsImproved particle retention at nominated micron ratings.
Pleated Media - Nominal1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 and 200 micronHigher media area with nominal filtration performance.
Pleated Media - Absolute1, 5, 10 and 25 micronHigher surface area with absolute-rated filtration options.
Selection note: Micron rating is only one part of filter bag selection. Fluid viscosity, solids loading, temperature, chemical compatibility and allowable pressure drop can significantly affect performance and bag life.

Nominal, Absolute and High-Efficiency Ratings

Filter bag ratings can be described in different ways. A nominal micron rating is a general guide to particle removal and is commonly used for economical felt bags and many general-purpose filtration applications.

Absolute-rated or high removal efficiency filter bags are selected where the application requires more controlled particle retention at a nominated micron size. These bags may provide improved removal performance but can also create higher pressure drop and may require more careful sizing.

For critical applications, filter bag selection should consider the required removal efficiency, operating conditions and acceptable changeout frequency rather than relying on micron rating alone.

Selection should consider:

  • Required particle removal size
  • Nominal or absolute filtration requirement
  • Removal efficiency expectations
  • Fluid viscosity and temperature
  • Solids loading and particle type
  • Allowable pressure drop
  • Expected filter bag life
  • Chemical compatibility with the process liquid

Bag Filter Vessel Compatibility

Filter bags are available to suit many industry-standard bag filter housings. When replacing bags in an existing vessel, it is important to confirm the bag size, ring type, material, micron rating and vessel sealing arrangement.

Many industrial bag filter vessels use common Size 01, Size 02, Size 03 or Size 04 bags, but variations can occur between brands and vessel designs. Monarch can assist with identifying suitable replacement options when bag or vessel details are available.

Helpful replacement information:

  • Existing filter bag size or dimensions
  • Vessel brand or model
  • Ring style and seal arrangement
  • Existing media material
  • Current micron rating
  • Fluid type and operating temperature
  • Reason for replacement or performance concern
  • Photos of the existing bag and vessel, where available

Filter Bag FAQs

Filter bags are used inside bag filter vessels to remove suspended solids from compatible liquids. They are commonly used in process water, chemical, food and beverage, coating, resin, wastewater and general industrial filtration applications.

Felt filter bags are commonly used for nominal depth-style filtration, while mesh filter bags use defined openings and are often selected for coarser filtration or applications where higher open area is beneficial.

The correct micron rating depends on the particle size to be removed, required filtration result, fluid type, solids loading, flow rate and allowable pressure drop. Micron rating should be selected together with the correct bag media and vessel size.

Extended life filter bags are designed to provide greater dirt-holding capacity and longer service life than standard nominal-rated felt bags in suitable applications. They may help reduce bag change frequency.

Useful information includes the existing bag size, vessel brand or model, ring style, media material, micron rating, operating fluid, temperature and photos of the current filter bag or vessel where available.
